Access to nutritious food is a fundamental component of healthcare, particularly for individuals living with severe, complex and chronic illnesses. The Food is Medicine Coalition (FIMC) is at the forefront of this movement, uniting nonprofit organizations that provide medically tailored meals (MTMs) and groceries (MTGs), along with medical nutrition therapy and counseling, to communities across the country. Through policy advocacy, research, and best practices, FIMC works to ensure equitable access to these life-saving interventions, recognizing that food is not just sustenance—it is medicine.
Now, FIMC is taking a major step forward by expanding its membership to include organizations providing only MTGs, strengthening a vital intervention in the food is medicine spectrum. MTGs play an essential role in supporting individuals who may not require fully prepared meals but still need access to carefully tailored, condition-specific nutrition that is the result of an assessment by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.
In early 2025, FIMC launched a dedicated MTG membership program, providing these organizations with access to a national network of experts, research-driven best practices, and policy advocacy to elevate the field.
To ensure alignment with FIMC’s mission, eligibility criteria have been established to uphold high-quality service provision among members. MTG member agencies will gain access to technical assistance, capacity-building resources, policy support, research and innovation opportunities, and communities of practice. A unique benefit of joining at this stage is the opportunity to contribute to the development of the MTG standard—helping shape the future of medically tailored grocery programs.
Organizations interested in joining can apply through the MTG Membership Application process. By expanding its reach, FIMC is fostering a stronger, more connected community of providers dedicated to ensuring that food remains a powerful tool for health and healing.
