
In a recent Time article, “Prescriptions for Healthy Food? What to Know About the ‘Food Is Medicine’ Movement,” author Claire Sibonney shines a light on the harsh realities of food insecurity and the growing Food is Medicine (FIM) movement.
There are profound health and economic impacts of poor nutrition. Research has demonstrated the impact of the high-quality medically tailored meal intervention – which is inclusive of nutrition counseling, education and, as indicated, medical nutrition therapy by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist – on improved health outcomes, reduced hospital readmissions, and enhanced quality of life for patients facing chronic or serious illnesses.
FIMC agencies created the medically tailored meal model and maintain the nutrition standards for the intervention. We work at the nexus of healthcare and nutrition to advance the integration of food is medicine into healthcare.
Prescriptions for healthy food, coupled with federal funding from Medicare and Medicaid for reimbursement, will improve health outcomes for our most vulnerable populations and lower the cost of care.
